Debian 6 no HP proliant (2 CPU) com ataque (2 * 1.5T RAID1 + 2 * 2T RAID1 se juntou ao RAID0 para criar 3.5T) rodando principalmente nfs & imapd (mais samba para compartilhamento de janelas e www local para visualizar páginas da web); com o cliente de desktop ubuntu local montando $ HOME, laptops acessando imap e arquivos ímpares (por exemplo, vídeos) via nfs / smb; caixas conectadas 100baseT ou wifi via roteador / switch doméstico

A instalação está funcionando há meses, mas é propensa a ficar intermitentemente muito lenta (experiência do usuário na montagem de desktop $ HOME a partir do servidor ou laptop executando vídeos) e agora consistentemente tão ruim que tive que me aprofundar nela para tentar descobrir o que havia de errado (! )
O servidor parece bom com carga baixa, por exemplo, cliente (laptop) (com $ HOME no disco local) conectando-se ao imapd e ao nfs de montagem RAID do servidor para acessar 1 arquivo: o topo mostra carga ~ 0,1 ou menos, 0 espera
mas quando o cliente (desktop) monta $ HOME e inicia a sessão do usuário KDE (todos os servidores acessando), o topo é exibido, por exemplo

Então, eu acho que tenho alguma idéia do que é o problema, mas não sou um especialista em sysadmin do linux pelo mais remoto limite da imaginação e gostaria muito de ver algumas pistas aqui com meu diagnóstico e o que preciso fazer:
- obviamente eu preciso adquirir outra unidade para sdc. (Suponho que eu poderia comprar uma unidade maior se o preço for justo: estou pensando que um dia precisarei aumentar o tamanho da matriz e isso seria uma unidade a menos para substituir por uma maior)
- use o mdadm para reprovar o sdc existente, remova-o e ajuste a nova unidade
- fdisk a nova unidade com a mesma partição de tamanho para a matriz que a antiga
- use mdadm para adicionar a nova unidade na matriz
isso soa bem?
